When the weight of my heart is so heavy
that not even seven cranes can lift
I turn my head to you, eyes aching
and let you start the slow drain into emptiness
murmuring that then you will begin the fill

Step by step through the wilderness
one sun, one moon, one sun again
one breath, one small clearing
one small thought of hope

To stabilize weak body muscles,
strengthen surrounding body muscles
while strengthening the weak
To stabilize weak spiritual muscles,
strengthen surrounding spiritual muscles
while strengthening the weak
Everything is in the system
and that within that
and that within that

You got me through the night
You got me to sleep.
The nights are not taken for granted
and nor are the days.
Step by step through the wilderness
one sun, one moon, one sun again
one breath, one small cleansing
one small thought of hope

The tree is full of emptiness
her arms outstretched and holding it,
and of course, the emptiness overflows her arms –
That is how it is, I comfort her
That is how it is

The maple tree is naked
almost
her last leaves, now brown
cling tenaciously, a handful on each branch –
both a handful of brown
and a handful of tenaciousness.
I understand, I whisper to them
letting go is hard

I recently participated in a collective film project where our goal was to investigate what social justice looks like in the body. I had been invited to be the spoken word artist. I named my poem, “A Declaration of Belonging,” which became the title of the film project, and which got accepted into the festival.
Special thanks to the 7 Stages Film Festival as well as the director of our project, Leah Mann.
May this ending cycle of the year bring you safety and peace.
Fondly,
Meisaan

Surrender in the storm
is surrender’s deepest strength

Dark December morning
I groggily make the coffee
heavy gray sky slow to move, too
the both of us present to each other
