On breaking up

I.
It is compassionate to let go
if hanging on leads to lifeless wounds

II.
The length of history is important
but not as important as the quality of future

III.
Walking away is not running away
if you faced the demons
and know they will remain

IV.
Do not shake the dust off your feet
but gently wipe your shoes and then wipe theirs:
walk away with compassion

The decision to act upon what you know

You know your ways into tranquility, says the Lord
and you know your ways into chaos
I am the way in
I am the way out:
this, too, you know

The equally difficult task

For those accustomed to power,
the task is to acknowledge smallness before God:
For those oppressed and downtrodden,
the task is to acknowledge grandiosity of light

Lift your eyes from the pavement

Lift your eyes from the pavement
for I so love to bedazzle

What you accept

What you fear amounts to a thimble of water, says the Lord;
I am trying to give you an ocean of love

Purposes

O star
guiding me home
O dark night
that I may see the star

The closed door

Do not fear the closed door
for not every open door is good

Ancient wounds

God can be a tender father
but for those who’ve never had a tender father
God can be a tender mother
but for those who’ve never had a tender mother
God can be a tender spirit
and soothe
and soothe
and soothe in all shapelessness
slowly healing ancient wounds

Those you find hardest to love

Those you find hardest to love
are your spiritual teachers;
seek them out:
die with compassion

Spiritual leaders, II

Stop expecting someone to walk your path for you!
No one will cart you to the finish line:
there is no cart
there is no finish line
there is only your feet
and the intensity of your fire
