Where you are connected makes all the difference

I move the candle to the shadows so its flame is better seen:
The shadow means nothing to the flame because
the flame is connected to the wick, not to the shadow;
the light means nothing to the flame because
the flame is connected to the wick, not to the light;
Where you are connected makes all the difference –
Listen!

When in sadness

When in sadness
go deeper than the sadness, says the Lord
for the sadness has an end
and I do not

Trail post reassurance

I’m lost, I say to the trail post
Not to me, the trail post replies

The sun still rises

Still, the sun rises.
Even if I were to write no poems and fall mute
the sun, still, would rise.
That is both infuriating and comforting.
Things are not that bad to stop the turning of the earth
and the swirling of the cosmos;
the power beyond me continues to be beyond me
that is good, I whisper
as I continue to find my place

The wisdom of strawberries

The strawberries are tart and hard,
but it is April in a pandemic
so all is welcome to its extent.
Just as I find sleep to be elusive,
my mind distracted and inefficient
but it is April in a pandemic
so all is welcome to its extent.

Pandemics and imperfection

How much more do I desire perfection in a pandemic!
The pendulum swings to extremes
and I, unseeing, am not aware that this need for perfection
simply pushes it harder

When the externals change

When the externals change
go deeper into the eternal unchanging

In the unknown

You need obedience more than you need a plan, says the Lord;
one can accept the unknown
the other not

I take care of you

It snowed last night, wind howls now
and still the duck sits on her nest
enfleshing the promise
