Tool

Anger is a tool;
if it is anything more than that
it is not mine

Restlessness

Restlessness carves branching paths:
one always leads to me

In the calmness

In the calmness
the gentle hand,
in the quiet
the yearning

The sky glows above

The sky glows above
the mirror water glows below
everywhere I look, all is light
my heart steps into that light

The heavy lifting of friendship

The heavy lifting of friendship
can only be done together
and the worth of friendship can only be known
when lifted

On we go

On we go
glowing grasses
dawning light
freedom dripping off our tusks

Unseen God

Whoever called you the unseen God
was numb in the deepest sense of the word
for you are here in the glowing trees
and red lights and stop signs
and surprise sales when we’re shopping
and silent tears and heartaches
and concerts and fire alarms
and mosquito bites –
The God who appears even in mosquito bites
cannot be an unseen God;
if anything God is so everywhere
that we can lull to sleep in the ever-presence of the divine
and so while we breathe God and eat God and our hearts beat of God
and while we shake our hair with shimmering droplets of God
we somehow marvel that our God is so
unseen

On self-pity

It is good to be found
and even better when I accept
that I was never left behind

Give it all to me

Give it all to me
your endless rage
seas of weeping
and sweeping fear;
I did not build the heart to be a prison
for your blind and lame and diseased
but a chamber to be emptied out
and filled eternally with me

Tango lessons

I will never push
always suggest
a dancer on the floor,
with the slightest pressure
speaking the language of skin
waiting to take you everywhere
if you listen

And if you don’t
we can dance the basic step forever
but please don’t tell me I’m lackluster
when I’m just waiting for you
to let me lead

The follower does not need to know
what step comes next
only how to respond
at a moment’s notice

And it will get intricate, yes,
so don’t look at the blur of feet –
to know what you cannot
and hear what I want
dare to close your eyes
