Belief is a cobblestone path
pocked and winding, with many stones missing
but still headed toward the center

Take courage: you will need it to love
take strength: you will need it to love
take humility: you will need it to love
take compassion: you will need it to love

it might not be love

Muscle fibers tear
the soul lengthens
joy: yes

Through the din, listen:
you know the sound of my voice
follow what you know
Follow what you don’t know
as one unseen step leads to another, unseen
for I am the darkness, the unknown path
I am the mysterious strength

A singing bird woke me in the middle of the night,
one lone voice trilling through the stillness:
Annoyed, I stumbled to the bathroom –
what is wrong with this crazy bird, why won’t it shut up
but upon my return,
I saw a rectangle of moonlight bright upon my carpet
and I peeked out the window:
the moon
full and resplendent, haunting, poised;
my heart lifted as I saw that luminous face,
so elegant and generous, shedding all shyness
I was stunned at her sheer nobility
and the universe suddenly made a little more sense;
through the darkness, that one bursting voice of adulation
– only one? –
Yes, little love, yes: sing on

I am the open door:
some choose to dance through
some crawl on their bellies
and others simply walk;
it does not matter how you pass
but please choose my door
