in the fragrance, mind lifts

Even in full sunlight, a tree’s leaves are still in shade,
each leaf casting shadow over its sister leaf’s light;
even when attached to the same branch, they get in each other’s way –
They could start fighting
or they could see that they both draw nutrients, both give nutrients
in a deep state of interbeing,
and that fighting with each other is fighting with oneself

Take me deeper, I request of the Lord.
I can use anything to bring you deeper, the Lord responds,
you will need to agree

Your mere existence takes resources, says the earth,
and then you continue to take
and take and take and take and take –
and then you pray for yet more things! –
when really, you ought to be praying for your conversion

In the midst of burden
a breath of space
a light caress
a pause, remembrance
a weight strangely lifted

Surrender
I cannot make happen
sand through fingers: Grasp harder, lose faster

The path ends at the edge of a cliff.
The path has not ended, the Lord says to me.
This is where you jump

When you are filled to the brim with compassion
you cannot ingest their poison
for there is no room left
The moment you decide to ingest some of their poison
some compassion will come out
for there is no room left

If you seek a home without any shadow side,
you are seeking a spiritual home, not to be found on this earth.
Rejoice! You are clarifying your intent

In quickly changing times, be nimble:
A mountain goat, sure-footed and fleet,
an expert at finding tiny divots for the hoofs and weight;
it can’t stay there long, nor does it want to, nor ought –
it is designed to move
