Sunset
Liquid gold lines the clouds
and as I gaze outward
my tiny, brittle heart
remembers its expanse

To give a thank you to God
To give a thank you to God
is to throw a drop of water into the sea;
to become a thank you for God
is to join the sea

Idol
Overwhelming stress
is an indication
that an altar has been built

The lost
Here I come
hair tied back
sweeping up the lost

Yes, you are helpless
Yes, you are helpless
and plans fall apart
and people disappoint
and promises aren’t kept
and your body breaks down;
all of these are gentle doors
that open to my heart
and only I am waiting to comfort you eternal
as long as you choose to pass through

A note to the traveler

most loop back around

Detour
I stare at the flooded road.
“Don’t worry,” God says. “There’s another way.” My heart drops at the burned-out bridge. “Don’t worry,” God says. “There’s another way.” I wail when I see the tornadoed stretch. “Don’t worry,” God says. “There’s another way.” In a fit of anger, I shred the map. God smiles and says, “Exactly. Now you can follow me.” © Meisaan Chan

Scrub off the grime on your heart
Scrub off the grime on your heart;
be vigilant, for it collects
and scrubbing once only means
that you’ve scrubbed once,
while vigilance requires every moment

House party
Your whisper cuts through the din
and pulls me along a suddenly forested road;
all of the people and the party fade away
and here I am with you, my spirit tingling like a divining rod
leaping in my hands: there’s water
