Behold, I stand at your door and knock

Behold, I stand at your door and knock
because your doorbell doesn’t work
– or maybe you took it out –
but that doesn’t dissuade me;
I am patient; I will do this all day
as long as I know that a part of you wants to answer

Found and lost

When you are found
I lead and you follow, God says;
when you are lost
you lead and I follow

Gaze upon my infinite face

Gaze upon my infinite face, says the Lord
and you will find that
I am infinitely gazing upon you

Beauty

I came back from watching the sunset,
camera hanging around my neck,
to find a female downy woodpecker
dead on my porch.
My camera weighed heavily –
all of that beauty, snapped and captured,
and this one, in my hands,
free

Of course the earth has a soul

Of course the earth has a soul
it speaks that ancient language
which prickles up your spine

Put away the guns

Put away the guns
Put away the carnage in your heart
Put away the just war
for they are not your shields
but blankets of disease;
fold them in half, then in half, then half again
and give them to me for safe keeping;
I will always return them, should you ask
but when your infections clear
and your fevers leave
and the nightmares stop
and you can breathe
you might find yourself looking forward instead of back;
you might never ask, my child
you might never ask

Step into my heart, says the Lord

Step into my heart, says the Lord;
do not deviate, go straight in, don’t be shy
for I have made this doorway just for you
and I am standing right inside;
You cannot know how long I’ve waited
with bated breath for your approach;
It does not matter where you’ve been
but that you’re at the doorway now,
hand upon the knob and push

Dark is the night

Dark is the night
but your heart is a window
lighting the world

Everything points to God

Everything points to God:
some things are blunt, like children pointing to the sun
others subtle, a leaf turning to the light
and yet others utter “God” only through their darkness

The fog insists on caressing the earth

The fog insists on caressing the earth
and we, before taking flight
bathe in silent spirit
