Layers
It doesn’t matter how many layers of fear you need to peel away, says the Lord
just that you keep on peeling;
It also doesn’t matter how many layers of shame
for only I am endless

God so loved
God so loved
and loved and
loved that there
was no room
for anything else;
not even nothing
could stay

All points are entry points
All points are entry points
once you’re ready to enter
but if you’re not
even a laser won’t cut open the door:
finding God is not the question
being ready to find God is

I might be plain
I might be plain
but I know the sound
of mist soaking into the grass
and the dazzling taste of sunlight
and the wonderful, thick patience
needed to greet the crescent moon;
it is fine that I am plain
for what is most elegant, most exquisite
is often right in front of us,
hidden

There are lion’s dens
There are lion’s dens
and nightmares in the sky
but no matter how it seems
still you are protected

Few are defined by their dreams
Few are defined by their dreams
or their longings
or their passions;
if you consider instead, one’s actions,
many are defined by their impulses
and even more are defined by their fears

Little addictions
All of our little addictions
distract us from our heart’s calling
little by little
by little by little

One day I got up and walked over to God.
One day I got up and walked over to God.
“God,” I said, “Why is it
that people can live and die without
knowing love? Why is it
that so many suffer needlessly? Why is it
that our burdens can kill us?”
And God started to weep.
At first I was stunned
then I got impatient
as God continued to weep and weep.
After a long while, God dried her eyes and said,
“I offer life but so few take it.
The ones that do can still be slain by the ones that don’t.”
“But what about love conquering all?” I asked.
Her face lifted. “Love does not conquer, as in a war.
Instead, love will be the last one standing.”
“In victory,” I prompted.
“She will be tending to all,” God clarified.
“But she will always be the last one standing.”

High above my fevered heart
High above my fevered heart
the crescent moon and two bright stars
piercing through the city lights
celestial hand curving down
luminous, hovering,
a tender washing over me

Sometimes you just got to go through it
Sometimes you just got to go through it:
as an athlete practices until collapse
this is but practice for the next step
Nothing says you have to progress;
indeed, all along the path are those like stones
who have chosen not to continue on
