To my friend

I want to help you but you walk away
I call you but you don’t respond
I run to rescue you and you drop into waters
with a weight around your feet
– come back, dear one, come back –
I yearn for you
and know that in your veil of heavy shroud
you do not yearn for me

Music

The music stops me
such sweet melody;
I sit, transfixed
as my soul floats away

Out of the midst, an island appears

You might not see me
but take comfort
I am close

Non-identification

Grackles have lousy names
twisting sound, spitting in dust
still, they lift and fly

no matter how dark the sky

The extraordinary happens
whether we see it or not

Search engine

I check all devices and gadgets
and log on to all memberships
waiting for something to happen,
something beyond myself, some great calling,
something that will answer this restlessness
but the only thing that happens
is that, though I keep checking
I get the gnawing feeling that
I just missed it
and to dismiss it
I keep checking

Identity

“Who am I?” I ask the Lord.
“Who am I?” the Lord asks me.

Even when you think it’s gone

Even when you think it’s gone
the ghosts remain

Rare strength

In admitting you were wrong
your world expands,
the same with admitting you need help:
you are not the center
