How you need to look

Steep mountain trail curls through the forest
in an unrelenting ribbon of rock and clay;
I go forward, slowly, muscles burning on the climb;
when I remember to look up, I see the also unrelenting beauty
but some times demand that I keep my head down, focusing on the small,
on the step by step by step by step

Doing exactly as you please

Doing exactly as you please
without being affected by others
could be a sign of freedom
or isolation

Flower petals

I scatter them wherever you go
and sometimes you tread without noticing,
but if you look at the bottom of your feet, you will see
that I scatter them wherever you go

Without batting an eyelash

God purifies
Humans mess it up
God purifies
Humans mess it up
God purifies

God, magnified 1,000x

So close I get to you that you lose your familiar shape:
have courage, my soul, you still are home
what is foreign is the intimacy

The demand

“I demand nothing less than utter saturation,” I say to God.
God smiles. “A very lovely demand.”

Whatever you decide, don’t let fear stop you

If you’re afraid if you do
and afraid if you don’t,
fear is equal:
be afraid, then! Proceed!

Terror in the night

Terror in the night
terror in the storm
terror, everywhere, terror:
God my help, come and find me
for I know not where I am

The enemy prayer

They may see me as their enemy
but may they not be enemies in my heart,
for there are only so many chances to love in this lifetime
only so many chances to be transformed

The perpetual lift

Sometimes you protect me from the stupid things I do
and other times you expose me, hoping that I learn;
both ways are pure compassion, for even when I fall
there I am, on the ground and wiser
there you are, the perpetual lift
