Waterfall

In stillness
I gaze at all the rushing
watching as my sister, too,
flies

It can be tempting to think I am a machine

It can be tempting to think I am a machine
efficient,
calculating,
knocking out that to-do list
until I hit a glitch
until the machine breaks down
until I come to a garden with a single lily growing
and behold it with my eyes, my flesh
lungs breathing in, breathing out

You’re never going to be alone

You’re never going to be alone
because I’m not outside of you, able to be lost;
I am dug into your marrow
entrenched

A day at the beach, 1905

What happens to our joy when we die
to our frolicking under the sun
or our contentment of digging our toes in the sand;
what happens to the love of ghosts,
these centuries standing on the shoulders of millennia
standing on the wispy non-shoulders beyond memory
– it’s just one big lake –
and each day we add our bliss, our suffering, our passion
drop by drop

When I give you a quiet moment

When I give you a quiet moment
do not fill it and then say
you never get a quiet moment

The sun does not crush me

The sun does not crush me
nor do monsoons
nor does the enormity of the sky
and stroke by stroke I come for you
to find where you are lost

Stop surfing

Stop surfing –
what are you looking for, anyway?
At least nomads focus on their sheep
but you: you’re training your mind to focus on nothing

Going numb is sometimes needed

Going numb is sometimes needed
but do not forget to reawaken the heart
or else it will slumber on

I am as gentle as dappled sunlight on your skin

I am as gentle as dappled sunlight on your skin;
your heart, so delicate
– so mishandled! –
shivers, not trusting the goodness,
but come, I whisper,
despite your swath of fear,
come into the heart

Let me set up a tent for you

Let me set up a tent for you, I say
and a soft smile crosses your face;
let’s put it up together, you respond,
and we face it to the east,
so when we unzip the door
with a fresh breeze, bright
we see another beginning:
our hearts breathe into living space
as open opens unto open
