Peel back the layers

Peel back the layers
so that old can become new again
so there is more space for beauty

Watchful days

Long drive; tall, dry corn,
trees showing hints of golden fire:
watchful days, not yet burning alive,
but watchful

Holy discipline is necessary for self-love

Holy discipline is necessary for self-love:
to walk when you need to walk
to rest when you need to rest
to run when you need to run
to pursue ecstasy when you need to pursue ecstasy
to return when you need to return

The mobile altar

If you can no longer carry your burden
put it down and build and altar right there, offering it up
for altars can always be built where they are needed

When life is thick with difficulty

When life is thick with difficulty
do not forget my house, says the Lord:
I throw open my doors for the poor

When life is so thick with difficulty
you don’t even have to make it to my house:
lo, I come for you
