One day I got up and walked over to God.

One day I got up and walked over to God.
“God,” I said, “Why is it
that people can live and die without
knowing love? Why is it
that so many suffer needlessly? Why is it
that our burdens can kill us?”
And God started to weep.
At first I was stunned
then I got impatient
as God continued to weep and weep.
After a long while, God dried her eyes and said,
“I offer life but so few take it.
The ones that do can still be slain by the ones that don’t.”
“But what about love conquering all?” I asked.
Her face lifted. “Love does not conquer, as in a war.
Instead, love will be the last one standing.”
“In victory,” I prompted.
“She will be tending to all,” God clarified.
“But she will always be the last one standing.”
